The tribe was up bright and early this morning for a leisurely breakfast and coffee before trekking off for a group hike in Bryce Canyon. The weather was gorgeous and spirits were high. The camp emptied out and Jack and I got cleaned up, packed up and headed back down to Panguitch.

I did have to take the opportunity to share a full bag of mixed nuts (not salt or fat added) with the two REALLY CUTE chipmunks that had been checking us out all morning. We sat for about a half an hour laughing at their antics. One chubby little fellow had a hiding spot close to where we were and was able to stuff his little cheeks full and make many many trips back and forth. The other poor little guy couldn't quite match the quantity as Chubby and he had much further to go: he would run over to a split rail fence, scurry up, run one length on the bottom rail, one length on the middle rail, and then about 8 more lengths on the top rail till he reached his stash. He would repeat the route in reverse, the exact same number of rails at each level each way. I could have sat there every day.

We finally made our way to Panguitch and found the quilt show. I spent an hour wandering in awe viewing all of the amazing quilts. People came from as far as Las Vegas to show their works.

After the show we made our way to the camp ground to set up for the night. I have not stayed at this camp ground in a few years and was happy to find it much improved and almost full! The previous owner wasn't a customer service kind of guy and for the last few years I have been on this tour we stayed elsewhere and the campground always looked empty. One of the big changes are these really cool canvas yurt kind of things that we have never seen before and were itching to find out what the story is! I mentioned to Daryl how great things looked and he told me the new owner was doing a great job, a real people person, and from Washington State. I had to find out more!

I met the owner a few minutes later and introduced myself and asked him where in Washington he was from. He said that he retired four years ago and moved down front the town of Sedro Wooley. Interesting, I said. My family lives near there in the little community of Bow. Names? Yes, he knew my sister and her husband well. Small world!

What we did find out about the Yurt looking things are that they are owned by a European company that rents the space from the KOA. They have 3 rooms: a sitting/kitchen room with a microwave, cook stove & refrigerator: then two bed rooms. One size sleeps 8, one 6, and one 4. The company that owns them puts together package deals for people to fly into San Francisco, have a rental car, and tour the canyons staying in these lodgings. When they are not full the KOA can rent them out to their guests. They are less expensive than a hotel room and they are really cool!

The tribe started coasting in, (it's almost all downhill from Bryce), and we started getting ready for dinner. Pasta night. Except I forgot to order the pesto from my supplier. Strike two this week: menu change once again. Pasta was still on but I had to figure out another sauce for the vegimites. We went from a light pesto sauce to a really delicious, rich and creamy, super alfredo sauce with three cheeses and mega veggies. Pair that with a meat filled red sauce, tossed green salad, garlic bread and raspberry shortcake for dessert. Yumm.

Daryl had asked me earlier if I could get a cake for a special occasion for tonight. I held back a laugh. We are in Panguitch. One grocery store. They don't even have a watermelon. I could get ho ho's or twinkies. And why do we need a cake?

While on the hike in Bryce one young rider surprised his girlfriend by proposing. He said that if she could put up with him for three years and three bike trips together he'd better ask. Congrats you two!

The tribe headed to bed early as tomorrow is the big climb and screaming downhill. Everyone is hoping the wind is their friend. Not looking too good with the forecast. Wait and see.Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-57003724631848120222014-06-10T21:01:00.000-07:002014-06-10T21:06:56.862-07:00Day One, Day Two.....

Yes, I'm getting sunburned.......and working. Pics of Zion. The mad scramble to find the right dishes.

I think I left off getting this tribe on the road in Saint George to head up to Springdale, the entrance to Zion National Park? Not that Springdale is in question, just my ability to now keep day one and day two separate in my little brain.

We did see them off. We headed to Costco to pick up a few odds and ends. Then we, too, headed up the canyon. What a beautiful day! HOT HOT HOT. I know a few tribe members that will be chillin in the river this afternoon.

Before we pulled into the camp ground Jack was kind and loving enough to pull off in Springdale so I could "browse" at a gallery that I love. They feature the work of a local potter that I love and have a couple of pieces from. Every other year we have been here I have "allowed myself" to "invest" or "indulge" in a piece. I thought I was safe this year. There were only two of her pieces on show and they were too similar to what I own. Whew. But then the curator said, "Oh, I have a whole collection of her work in the back room." Oh, my, yes she did. What to do, what to do? Invest, of course. I now have a lovely, really cool, indescribable piece being shipped home. And Jack said Happy Birthday. My birthday isn't until October, but I so am happy.

So enough of that nonsense. We got into camp and set up for dinner. I am amazed at the places that I get to cook. Look to the East and look the the West and what more could you ask for than the majestic cliffs of Zion as your back yard? And tomorrow the back yard will change!

While we were slaving away in some pretty good heat the tribe was headed up river to explore the park. Hiking, biking, walking, they did it all. A few were able to make it to the Virgin River and walk up the canyon in the river. I was fortunate enough to hike this with a friends daughter a few years back. It was amazing. So were the chipmunks at the entrance to the hike. They were so amazing they could zip open your backpack, dig out whatever food item you may have stored and claim it as their own. Chipmunks are so cute.

When the tribe returned to camp we had the feast ready for them. They enjoyed a marinated vegetable salad with rice and quinuoa, greek lemon chicken, steamed red potatoes and yams, pan roasted cauliflower with garlic and cherry tomatoes, (YUMMMM! This was a new one and it was awesome!) and pound cake for dessert.

We hit the hay early to get up for an early start today. Speaking of early starts. I get up at 4:20 to get the coffee going and breakfast on the roll. The new deal is that coffee is at 5:30, breakfast at 6. Yeah right. Like who ever is up at 5:30 for coffee isn't going to want breakfast too. And those that get up before 5:30 would like their coffee early.. ..trying to be optimistic but not seeing too clearly on this one. Especially that early in the morning. I'm still in my pi's for goodness sakes. Yes, I cook in my pi's. The first morning in Saint George it went well. Ok, maybe I did lock everyone out of the building. Just until 5:30. Ish. But this morning? Camp fire at the catering truck. 5:13 and I have requests for breakfast. Sorry, Ain't going to happen. The results weren't ugly, I took my deep breath and tried to use the right response. But I think the message got sent. No camp fire at the catering truck until the doors are open.

So the tribe did get their french toast and scrambled eggs ON TIME and headed out to ride the switch backs up the canyon to catch the shuttle through the Zion tunnel. Dropped off at the other side they had a tough but spectacular ride to the quaint, (and I use that term loosely) little hamlet of Hatch.

Jack and I took the alternate route to Hatch. Tomorrow, when I have more time, I will give you the tunnel story with the big yellow truck. We headed up to Cedar City, picked up ice and then drove up the route the tribe will be riding down in a couple of days. Amazing the scenery when you go the opposite way that you have been driving for so many years! We did not turn to finish the top of Cedar Breaks, but stayed on 14 through Duck Creek Pond to head out to Hatch. I have driven this a couple of times, but this time we stopped at the visitors center. WOW. I had no idea that all this was there. Campgrounds, Trails, Falls, Caves, Ice Caves, Lava Beds, Lakes, Lava Tubes. You could spend a month exploring. And, the ladies at the visitors center said that right now all the deer and antelope were dropping their young (this is a good thing) and there are babies everywhere. We shall be back.

In Hatch we got set up for dinner and got dinner going early. The winds were awful and I can tell you a story about cooking a pot of rice here and one side got done and the other didn't. Fun stuff. We prepared a tossed green salad, spicy cabbage salad, curried chicken, tofu with a peanut yam sauce, grilled tomatoes and home made cookies for this very weary tribe when they got in.

Tomorrow is a short ride up to Bryce Canyon and then the exploring begins!Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-8379178474326626232014-06-09T08:23:00.000-07:002014-06-09T08:32:19.639-07:00I'm back!!!!!....

AWE KEVIN!!!! It's so good to have you back......I just LOVE watching you guys work. YUMM, breakfast casserole with sausage and mushrooms. Thank you Cousin Charlotte for the recipe!

Hopefully that's a good thing! I kind of fell off of the grid last summer: we experienced major technical difficulties on the Oregon tour and I never quite got caught up. Well, I didn't get caught up at all!

Last summers tours all went really well: Oregon Gorge was quite wet for most of the trip: Oregon Coast was awesome: Wine Country went well: Sierra Sampler had it's challenges due to wild fires, but we made it through. It's now time to start 2014's tours and I promise to do a better job of keeping you informed of the tours!

We spent the winter at home keeping things pretty quiet: well as quiet as I am able to! Jack did well with his surgery and chemo and the prognosis is good: Aaron has graduated with his doctorate in physical therapy and has landed an amazing job in Portland: Matt is coaching and finished his AA and is on track for his education degree: Scott.......oh Scott. There is a long story behind Scott, he's quite the unique young man as most of you know. He finished his training in Mississippi for the Marine Corps and got stationed in Okinawa. With his wife. Whom he didn't inform us was his wife until a week after they got married. Actually, he didn't inform US. He told Jack and asked HIM to tell me. Oh yes I had a few choice words. But, they seem happy and we hope to meet her this December when we visit Okinawa.

Today we are on the first ride day of Cycle Utah. OH MY GOSH it's good to be back here! I really missed coming down here the last two years. This has always been one of my favorite tours! We have a great staff with Daryl Patten leading the tribe. Kevin and Jack are back on the tours as well as Bill. We have 3 more great staff in addition to these three. Daryl's brother, Doug joined us at the last minute and I shall name him BD for remainder of the tour. (Bad Dad put his lab Lexi in puppy camp for the week....I will be without puppy kisses for 6 days. Bad Dad.) I will have a great time this week photographing the staff as they work hard.....most of the time it's in a chair with an adult beverage in their hand :). There is no escape you guys!

Our tribe checked in at 36 members last night. We had the unfortunate news the Leo and Sue, who have worked many many ACA tours had to drop: we hope you are well Leo and we will miss you!
First impressions are that this is a great group and I am looking forward to feeding this tribe, even if it is 102* out! It will cool down as we gain elevation.

After check in and our first map meeting last night, the tribe feasted on a dinner consisting of : Spring greens with fresh strawberries and toasted almonds with a maple vinegar dressing, Mediterranean baked cod (cod with tomatoes and capers on a bed of roasted leeks and fennel), stuffed green peppers for the vegimites, steamed basmati rice & quinuoa, fresh asparagus, watermelon slices, and brownies for dessert. Yummmm, it was good.

The tribe was up and out early this morning trying to beat the heat as they peddle up the hill to Zion Canyon. It's a nice ride and once they get up the hill and make the turn to Zion the scenery is breathtaking.

Breakfast this morning was pastries, fresh fruit with cottage cheese, hot 7 grain cereal, baked egg casserole with sausage and mushrooms, cereals and juice and OF COURSE, coffee. Must have coffee. And must have coffee early.

I will give you and update tomorrow of the ride and any antics that happen along the way. It's good to be back and I hope you follow along.

PS: hi to my kiddos at school! And the staff in room 120 too! I miss you guys. Remember: 5 more days!Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-53348394537358067082013-06-22T06:17:00.001-07:002013-06-22T06:17:39.038-07:00ON TO OREGON!We are packed up and heading to Oregon for the Gorge Tour: many great days of riding, fabulous scenery, and really good eats. And, really good eats. So sorry you're not here!

I was quite surprised that this ride did not fill! The Oregon Gorge is a fabulous tour! We are looking at a week of good weather, great riding, great ACA staff and a small group of cyclists that will be spoiled rotten.

Jack and I are looking forward to feeding this tribe and hopefully getting some ride time in for ourselves as well!

We will have limited internet access on this tour, but I hope to keep you up to date the best I can. We are going to kick off the event tonight at Oxbow State Park just East of Portland with our first map meeting and dinner. We are hosting a salad buffet with a tossed green salad with all the trimmings, a honey chicken salad, tuna salad, Orzo pasta salad, an amazing Quinoa salad with fava beans and fresh asparagus in a spicy fresh lemon dressing, and home made cookies for dessert.

We have some surprises along the way this trip: YUMMM! We will celebrate the Pacific Northwest one evening with a happy hour consisting of smoked salmon pate & crackers, (Jack caught and smoked the salmon!), grilled Olympic oysters on the half shell, Bourbon salmon as an entree and chilled dungeness crab to set off the meal. I am so so sorry that you are not one of the lucky 27 that will be feasting on this meal! (The rest of the week should be pretty good, too.)

So we're off on another adventure! We will keep you posted the best we can. Happy trails!

I get so frustrated with technology...or the lack there of. The wireless at the campground failed and I wasn't able to update my blog until Jack got home with the laptop and the big yellow truck. ARGHH.

So, I need to catch you up on the last few days of our ride. What a great time it was!

Wednesday was another layover day in Fredericksburg. This was to be our ride day too....but the weather did not cooperate. It was mega windy and the riders that headed out early to Enchanted Rock weren't quite so happy they did. It is a tough ride to begin with, but with the wind it made it not too enjoyable. Many chose to hang around town and explore the museums and restaurants, or just hang out at camp. We went in search of chicken fried steak and quilt shops. I know, what a combination, but I have a weakness for both! I have challenged myself to find the best chicken fried steak in Texas. And LORD they have some good chicken fried steaks. AND I found a chicken fried pork chop that was even better! Oh I should weigh 300 pounds. Jack says I am lucky to have the metabolism that I do. YUMMMMM.

Wednesday nights dinner was pasta with meat sauce, a pesto & artichoke sauce, baked polenta (this tribe is polenta happy) and salads.

Thursday the weather shifted back to gorgeous and the tribe had the most beautiful ride day on the trip. Rolling hills and incredible fields of wild flowers. We followed the tribe, with no off road mishaps this year, and enjoyed the flowers! We stopped at the water stop to view the dent in the pavement that we left last year and catch up with the tribe. Our water stop guru instructed me that if I needed the facilities I was to walk under the overpass on the main road. On a rock was a roll of toilet paper. If it was not there, someone was at the other side of the underpass visiting mother nature. If it was there, it was my turn. I passed.

We headed into Pedernales State Park to set up for the last supper. Greg had rented a circus tent and tables and chairs for the tribe to sit under and on. We were blown away that the tent crew had that thing up in less than 1/2 an hour! Some locals walked by and asked when the clowns would be arriving. Someone commented, "look around, they're on bikes!"

We prepared the final dinner of honey spiced pork chops, salads and such and watched the tribe over indulge! This was a tribe that could put away the chow. The staff put together a great final map meeting, reviewing the local slang and teaching us all that y'all means everyone and all y'all means everyone plus some. Then they presented awards and led the tribe in a rousing rendition of "let's go to Luckenbach Texas....but with a biker twist." Our leader, Greg, donned his cowboy gear and spun a big yarn about bikers in Texas. It was great fun.

Friday morning we bid farewell to our tribe...many new friends were made this week. The tribe headed back to New Braunfels to find their way home. We spent the day with our dishwasher/attorney friend Jim searching for a new chicken fried steak and exploring the Lynden B Johnson Ranch. What an interesting piece of history.....in the six years that I have been working this tour it is the first time I was able to make time to visit. If you're there, it's a must. Just beware....the goats like tennis shoe laces.

Well, another wonderful tour is over. I can't believe how quickly they fly by. And speaking of fly....I made my way back to Austin and flew home. Yes, I abandoned Jack and made him drive the big yellow truck 4 days home. Bad me. I don't think I will get away with that ever again.

SOOOOOO: those of you that have not signed up for a ride: the Gorge in June needs a pick me up in participants. It is a great ride. Leader Pete has made a couple of changes to ease it up a bit...and the weather should be awesome. That said, hope to see you on another ride!

The first ride morning of the Hill Country Tour broke with overcast skies and a cool breeze. The day looked promising for a great ride, with the haze burning off early afternoon and moderate temperatures during the day. The tribe migrated out of their tents and circled for a hearty breakfast, loaded up their gear and got on the road. The local buzzards, on the other hand, decided it was time for nappy nappy. In my tent. Jack, laughing, told me to look at my tent. The brazen buzzards were on their way in. Guess I found reason number 432 to not leave the tent open.

The ride Sunday morning was a lazy 39.4 miles into the little town of Blanco. We camped on the banks of the river at Blanco State Park and had use of the breezy pavilion for our meals. Fortunately there were no creepy crawly red headed centipedes to welcome us! We dined on a fabulous meal, if I do say myself, of blue cheese wedge salad, coleslaw, mesquite smoked brisket, grilled red fish, yellow potatoes and homemade brownies. The red fish was a huge hit!

About that red fish! I learned my lesson last year about buying the scaly little devils. Red fish filets, boneless, NO SCALES!! I swear there are still red fish scales on the ceiling of the pavilion from last year

Ride day #2 was 40.2 miles from Blanco to Fredericksburg. The tribe wandered through the hill country to Lyndon B. Johnson Historical Park , through Stonewall and into camp on the edge of Fredericksburg. The route the tribe takes is different from the one we take. They showed me pictures of gorgeous blue bonnets, a fabulous old church, Spanish moss balls in bloom, and centipedes with green spots and evil horns. I swear they grow the scariest critters I have ever seen here in Texas. And, they're big.

Dinner this night was a fajita bar with beef, chicken and tofu, with all the trimmings. The tribe did a great job of consuming massive quantities of fajita! As well, they finished off a record number of cookies for dessert. They are also setting a new record for beer consumption! It's a tribe of records! Speaking of beer, I found a great t-shirt for our dishwasher/lawyer who excels at beer consumption. It reads: In dog beers I've only had three.

Tonights map meeting was quite fun with our leader, Gary, running a road booty competition. The goal is to see who can find the most unique piece of booty that they find as they are riding along. I hope they are watching where they are going! The winner tonight was the finder of a deer skull. Other entries were a Texas license plate, a Texas A&M banner and a red French beret. Can't wait to see what they found today!

Today's ride was the Little Switzerland Loop consisting of 38.2 miles of up and down. I think there was 2300 feet of up and down. They all got in around lunch time and shuttled in to town to explore the brew pub and shops in Fredericksburg. Jack and I took off and trucked into Kerrville to visit one of my favorite quilt shops. Good Jack. We then headed to Opa's Sausage Factory to procure the yummy sausages for tonights dinner. They will be accompanied by homemade potato salad, broccoli salad, sauerkraut, creamy polenta, bbq'd pulled pork and ice cream for dessert.

This seems to be a happy tribe: they are all getting along well and are into exploring everywhere they go! We'll see where they end up tomorrow.

So here we are...another bike trip in Texas! After a week on the road Jack made his way to San Antonio and I flew back in on Wednesday. We spent to crazy days re- outfitting the truck and getting ready for a great week of feeding the tribe! During our stay in San Antonio I got to visit the Bistro on Broadway, a great venue if you get the chance, and sought out some great sushi. On Friday we made a final run to Costco and head to Sysco for a HUGE order! This tribe is going to have to have an appetite. The weather is looking to be good for the week, not too hot, not too cold!

So I have to fess up to a little boo boo on my part. Jack had booked a rental car for me as I flew into Austin and wanted to have a car for the week to be able to run around, pick up Jim, and get back to the airport. All went well, I got into Austin, found the Hertz desk and picked up the phone as you don't get to talk face to face with a real person anymore. I finalized the details and said sure to the question posed, "Do you want insurance on the car?" Mistake. They hit me with every possible piece of coverage available. When I got into San Antonio I told Jack that with the insurance the car was expensive: twice what I though it was going to be. No, he said. The car is already paid for. UhOh

The insurance was twice the price of the car. I think we need to dent it to get our moneys worth. It's the last time Jack lets me get a car.

Our leader and staff on this trip, all but one, are new to us. So, it will be an Adventure for us as well as them! We have a pretty large percentage of new riders to us as well, but our dear friend Hillary is riding! Yeah Hillary! Our friend Jim, from Baltimore, has joined us for a week of dishwashing....I don't know many people that would take a week of vacation to wash dishes!

On our way to set up at the Lazy L&L campground we stopped at a little corner burger joint...oh my gosh the burgers were good! The signs above were on the outside wall... I thought they were cute! We met up with our new leader Greg and his staff and got the truck ready to roll. The trip started on Saturday with the first map meeting and introductions all around. Our first ride day is Sunday and I will post more when we get into Fredericksburg on Monday!

Oh my gosh the week in California went fast! I was not able to write the blog as we did not have internet access but for one day! So a quick review: we had a great week with great weather and great riders and staff! Jerry kept us entertained with nightly dance lessons and a talent show the second to last night.....one tribe member can do a killer Woody Woodpecker imitation! Joe kept every one safe and sane with his side kick "Spanky".......which by the way is his new nickname! Bob kept every one rolling along taking care of the bikes and Tammy led a great ride! Our great friend Michelle brought a group of newbies to ACA touring from her bike club....they were a hoot and had a great time!

After a first long day from Chula Vista the tribe got to relax in beautiful hotel rooms and explore Julian. The second ride day was DOWWWWN the hill and up and over to Borego Springs where the tribe spent three days riding, hiking, chilling by the pool and eating! The second to last day was back up and over and UPPPPP to Julian for another night in the hotel. We had a fun last map meeting and bid everyone goodbye on Friday morning. Jack and stayed in Julian an extra day and explored town and spent a better part of the afternoon at the Blue Door Winery...it was a fun time!

After a day off I flew home to work for a week and a half and Jack headed East to spend time with friends and work his way to Texas, where we are now kicking of the Hill Country Tour. I promise to do a better job of blogging this next week! If you were on the CA tour, I would love to have you post some of your best memories of the trip!

Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-31969199751377855022013-03-18T21:04:00.001-07:002013-03-18T21:11:46.222-07:006th Grade or Bike Trips?????That is the question! Should I stay in the 6th grade or cater the bike trips.....hmmmm.

Well, tonight I have deduced that the two are the same. Thank you Jerry for your let's get acquainted, let's get to know everyone's name........let's jump back to the 6th grade. (To explain, Jerry (ACA staff) led a group warm up exercise that was really a lot of fun and we actually did learn a lot of names. I tease him about this because at the summer camps I have worked at, we do the "I'm going on a camping trip and I'm going to bring a.......and each person is required to remember the whole list. " His name game was pretty similar, just with names.

I have spent this winter working in the 6th grade; one on one with an amazing young lady and also with her peers: so it was tough: do I stay in the 6th grade or move on........Jack will tell you that I am stuck in the 6th grade. So Kaylen, Meggy, Deanna.....I hope that you read this and know how much I miss you.

So...With that all said.....we are off and running on the Spring Fling. I AM SO HAPPY that ACA moved the trip to a little bit later in the season: we have great weather and no snow and it's above 19*F in the mornings!!!

We began the trip yesterday in Chula Vista...We had a great day of sun and warm weather. The first tribe of the year gathered together and feasted on a meal of Greek Lemon Chicken, sprouted rice and quinoa, green salad, grilled tomatoes with sautéed onions and mushrooms, and home made cookiees for dessert. After dinner and Tammy's map meeting everyone turned in for a good nights sleep. They needed it to face today's ride!

Today was a long......long ride up from Chula Vista to Julian. At the lunch stop about half of the way through we met up with Pete (who leads tours for ACA) and he was psyched that the rest of the ride wasn't so bad. Sorry Pete. Many miles of up and around and up and around. But it is gorgeous! And you did all make it!

And you were rewarded with a dinner of curried chicken, peanut yam tofu, rice, sautéed snow peas, spicy cabbage salad, and of course, Nana's rum cakes. 91 and still baking those rum cakes!

Highlights today for me: picking up the yummy baked goods that I ordered from the Candy Apple Bakery in Julian. OH MY GOSH they do an amazing job. I am so excited to share these with tribe. Hint: tomorrow's breakfast is chef Charles' apple raisin French Toast.....YUMMMMM

So tomorrow we are on to Borrego Springs for 3 days.....sunny and hot and an opportunity to get some ride time in and maybe a hike or two.....

So if you haven't chosen your ride for this year let me tell you that the Oregon Gorge and the Oregon Coast should be on you must do list.......

RIP Ruby Dew We loved you so much

It's time to rock and roll and get ready for the 2013 season! The tours have been posted and they are filling fast! Texas is ALREADY full........get on the ball and get signed up!

Last year was a great year of cycling and eating! Many changes in our household.....Matthew is home from Afghanistan and coaching the high school wrestling team and back to school himself in January. Aaron is in his 2cnd of 3 years of grad school: when he's done he'll be able to tag along as the physical therapist for the tours! Scott is graduated and through Marine Corp boot camp: he is stationed in Mississippi for his schooling to study weather. They are all home for the holidays, as is the grandpuppy Baker. Quite a household!

We had a tragedy this fall: my beloved Ruby Dew, whom many of you got to know on the tours, was taken during the night in October by what we believe to be a cougar. She went out at 1:30, there were two yips and she was gone. It was a very difficult time.....I have so many fond memories of her on the tours....she loved to go in the big yellow truck and explore wherever we landed.....but, we do have a new addition that Jack gave me for my birthday. Her name is Pumpkin Patch and she is a darling little Cavalier. Hopefully you will get to meet her this next year.

So for next year this is where you can find us: The first tour in Southern California in March, Texas in April (sorry slow pokes, it's sold out!), the Oregon Gorge, the Oregon Coast, Sierra Sampler and the Wine and Harvest in California. These are for sure. And, we are still working on the logistics of the Idaho Relaxed and Idaho Family. No, I will not be in Utah, as many of you have asked. I am saddened by this because it is one of my favorites, but maybe some time in the future.

So get signed up and on that bike and we will see you in 2013! Happy holidays to all.......KathyKathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-26724715943193737382012-10-01T18:46:00.002-07:002012-10-01T18:58:16.077-07:00Share the Road.......

All grins: that's what we like!

The second to last ride day from Casini Ranch to Olema was one of those days that people driving the route either have to be extremely patient or get off the road! When we came off of 116 onto Highway 1 along the coast we shared our side of the road with about 100 other cyclists from another ride. Coming the other way on the road was the MS 150 with hundreds of riders. It was pretty crazy out there! I have to compliment our riders for sticking to the single file rule. The riders on the other ride must not have learned that one in cycle 101. Three abreast was not uncommon........a little tough for the big yellow truck, as well as rent a rv's, to get around.

It was a gorgeous day for a ride, though. One of the prettiest ride days! If you dared take your eyes off of the road! All of the little towns along the way were pretty crowded with people on bikes looking for coffee and pastries. Many of our tribe stopped in at Hog Island Oysters for a sampling of the local fare. Oysters while riding isn't quite what I would want for a snack. A few of the tribe headed up Coleman Valley for the optional ride of 5.7 miles. Unfortunately on of the tribe crashed on this loop and sported some pretty good road rash.

We were looking forward to battling raccoons again tonight. When we were here last year one big guy insisted on harassing us most of the night and all of the morning. He stole the bread right off of the end of the truck! But, they must of all found new hunting grounds. No raccoons this trip.

We had lunch in Olema and visited the cheese factory and farmers market, then headed to camp to prepare the last supper. It was salmon night for the tribe and they thoroughly enjoyed it! They finished every last bite. They didn't leave a crumb of the strawberry short cake either. I swear they were fighting over the whipped cream!

Arlen led the tribe in the final map meeting, giving out awards and kudos for a ride well done. We set out the jam for sale and took orders for zucchini relish to be shipped after I get home. This tribe took quite a liking to the zucchini relish. They relished over a jar a day at the lunch stops! I will have to make more next week.

The final day of the ride found the tribe up and out to head into San Francisco to find their way home. It was a great week: fast and furious. We have a 2 day drive home, I go right back to school, have a catering Tuesday night.......it doesn't end!

Arlen did announce the list of tours for next year! Hurrah! Time to start putting your ride plans together. I will let you know when we find out which ones we are working. Plus, Jack is thinking of putting his name in to lead a self contained tour. I'll let you know if he gets that one, too.

Though it was a short season for us this year, but it was a lot of fun. I hope to have the chance to feed you next year!

Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-25019737191145158482012-09-22T10:00:00.000-07:002012-10-01T18:26:13.112-07:00Who Put This Road on the Map? I really want to know who thought it would be funny to send us on today's route. So would the tribe members. It is my understanding that the route we took today was to cut the mileage from trips past. Thanks. If the hill into Sugarloaf wasn't bad enough.

We turned off of 128 just outside of Calistoga onto the Petrified Forest Road. Petrified is right. That is what I was for the next 12 miles. We were routed onto a one lane, at best, road that wound up and down and around and around and up and down some more. There was not shoulder, no visual of what lied ahead, steep ups and downs. Fortunately we stopped for an early lunch in Calistoga and did not have to pass any riders. It is a beautiful route, but not one for the big yellow truck.

We had lunch at a deli in the old train cars just across from the grocery store in Calistoga. This is a must eat when you are in town. The sandwiches are amazing as are the burritos and quiche. I was in heaven.

After the tricky Forest roads the tribe landed on the River Road and made their way into Guerneville and then on to camp at the Casini Family Ranch. Many bottles of Korbel Champagne were lugged along the way: it was a popular destination!

The tribe set up camp and dined on a green salad and veggie salad with honey mustard dressing: spiced pork chops: East Indian vegetable stew: orzo with pesto sauce: and more pecan pie bars and brownies for dessert. The tribe has finally found their appetite: I was a little concerned going out the gate because they really didn't eat like cyclists. They are now!

Following dinner Jerry led the tribe in some new dance moves. Yes, the Mocorana. YES, the Time Warp. He didn't lead them in this one, I did. A new low to my blossoming resume. I hope I still have a job after this! Did I mention I have seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show somewhere in the neighborhood of 50+ times? No, I don't dress up. Jack does: but I won't share the pictures. I think I want to stay married. So, it's just a jump to the left.........

.We hit the tent early: it's been a long week. Tomorrow is a long day into Olema......and is a great bakery in Duncan Mills that we need to visit, as well the Cowgirl Creamery in Point Reyes. More cheese....YUMMM!
I am convinced this tribe has set a record for the number of bottles of wine purchases on this tour! As well, the number of wineries visited! Today was the perfect opportunity for the tribe to seek out the tastings: they criss crossed the valley form Calistoga to Yountville to St. Helena and finally to Calistoga. It was a gorgeous day for riding and sampling. The weather has been perfect on this trip: not too hot, not too cold....

An interesting fact that I found out about today! When traveling through the vineyards many of them have roses planted at the end of each row. I have always wondered why: now I know! 1) It's tradition 2) roses and grapes grow the same and are very similar: roses are more fragile than grapes and are prone to the same diseases of grapes: if a disease hits the rose will come down with it first. This marker potentially saves the grapes!

We headed out of comp and beat feat for St. Helena: I LOVE the Model bakery there and couldn't wait to see what goodies were in store for us. We made it by lunch time and I splurged on a chicken and artichoke panini while Jack had salmon lox & capers on french bread with a bowl of fresh mushroom soup. We loaded up on loaves of ciabatta and french breads for tonights pasta dinner and headed into camp.

The tribe had a great day: those who chose to ride through St. Helena did have to deal with some pretty awful traffic..lots of cars and very slow. But following that it was not bad at all. A couple of the tribe members stopped and had lunch at the Culinary Institute of America. I am SO jealous. But, I have a hard time justifying $100.00 for lunch for two. Maybe next year.

At camp we prepared a pasta dinner that included a green salad nicouse: linguini with a homemade meat sauce: orzo with pesto and sundried tomatoes; sauteed zucchini and grilled breads from the Model bakery. Pecan pie bars for dessert. The tribe ate well.

After dinner many of the tribe members and staff headed into Calistoga for a soak in the hot springs. We have never done this, but will in the future! $20.00 for 2 hours of bliss......I can't wait to come back.

Tomorrow's route should prove to be interesting: we have not gone this way before. What lays ahead for this tribe? We'll see.
I don't think anyone stayed 100% on route all day....they wandered from winery to winery, criss crossing the route along the way. Why not? It was a short day with a screaming 2 mile downhill to start the day. Screaming was what I did all the way down. Jack informed me that if he used the brakes anymore than he was, we wouldn't have any brakes.

Some of the homes that we have seen on this trip are amazing. When we get into camp tonight I will be able to go back and post the pictures that I have taken along the way. In Petaluma the houses were the old mansions from the late 1800's and early 1900's. A couple along the road to Sugarloaf were breathtaking. Of course the wineries are spectacular....

After a day of pedals and wine most of the tribe headed into Napa to explore the old town. We found our way to the Oxbow Market on 1st Avenue. If you make it to Napa it is one place to see. It's an open indoor market with everything wine country that you could imagine. An olive oil shop, cheese shop, herb and spice counter, restaurants, (two of which featured 100% gluten free menus), oyster bar, coffee bar, produce stand, cupcakes, chocolates.....too much to take in! Unfortunately it's also very pricy. A bowl of clam chowder was $16.00: the cheeses started at $20.00 a pound. Around the corner from the market is a meat shop named "The Fatted Calf". It has every cut of pork, lamb, beef, whole turkeys, ducks, chickens, geese.....amazing place. But, beef jerky was $40.00 a pound. I bought a bag of organic dried beef dog treats.

We stayed tonight at the Skyline Wilderness Park just outside of Napa. It's a great little park with a beautiful Native Habitat Garden to wander through. We saw Blue Jays, Acorn Wood Peckers and Wild Turkeys. Unfortunately this camp ground had one set of two bathrooms and two showers at our end of the park. Made for some long lines in the morning!

After a dinner of spicy cabbage & pepper salad, curried chicken, peanut yam tofu, rice & sprouted beans, sautéd snow peas and chocolate birthday cake, (we had two birthdays today), the tribe followed along with Jerry and learned a few new line dances. Pretty cute. I think tomorrow night it's the mocorana. Maybe even the time warp! Oh how I love the Rocky Horror Picture Show! But that's another story.

Tomorrow we're off to Calistoga. I think the tribe will be exploring the whole valley, back and forth from winery to winery. We are heading through the great town of St. Helena to hit up the Model Bakery. I'll let you know what we find. Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-70395302629344570672012-09-20T09:25:00.000-07:002012-09-20T09:25:13.794-07:00Shake, Rattle, and.........Roll. That's what the did after leaving Petaluma. They rolled on two wheels through the valleys and vineyards into the Sonoma wine country. Most of them rolled into a winery or two for tours and tastings. Kendall Jackson was a favorite. The tribe did a good job of supporting the wine industry today!

Then, they rolled to the entrance of tonights overnight: Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. We should know by now that any venue with the words; ridge, hill, mountain, crest, view, bluff, etc.; means that you are going to have to go up. Up is not what you want for the last two miles of your day on a bike. Again, someone at ACA has a warped sense of humor. Should of had a clue when Arlen announced last night that they would be happy to shuttle anyone into the park from the turn off of the main road......though he didn't offer to shuttle my big yellow truck.

The climb into the park started out on a nice, wide, two lane road flanked on either side by organic vineyards. Beautiful clumps of dark purple grapes hanging from leafy green vines took your attention away from what lay ahead. Gradually the road narrowed and wandered through a quiet canyon with oak trees reaching across from each side. Gradually the road started to climb. Not so gradually it went vertical. 2 miles of vertical. (12%???) Not so gradually it opened up on MY SIDE of the truck to a stellar view of what we just went up. That means a cliff. That means my palms are sweating and I'm breathing a little irregularly. It also means that we have to go back down tomorrow. Drats. Finally we made it into the park and up to the top to the group sight that was reserved for us. That's where the rattle comes in.

Rattle snakes. Hundreds and hundreds of them. The group sight nestled up to a big outcropping of black rocks. The park manager informed our luggage guru that the rocks were home to hundreds of rattle snakes. They are pretty docile he said. They won't bug you unless you get too close or step on one. I don't think so. Since Arlen was not available the three of us decided it was necessary to explore other options. (Plus the showers and restrooms were 1/2 a mile away, nay for the one pit toilet in the parking lot. ) We settled on a beautiful sight in the lower campground, away from the rattle snakes, tucked into a grove of trees with lots of comfy camp sights. It was a good choice. The only critters were three young deer that visited in the morning.

Our well imbibed tribe dined on bbq'd pulled pork, opa's sausages, texas wedge salad, broccoli salad, sauerkraut, steamed asparagus and veggies, fingerling potatoes, and and a huge plate of brownies. They then rallied around the campfire well into the evening then tucked in for a cool night of sleep.

Tomorrow will find them exploring more wineries and the town of Napa. Another boost to the economy is about to happen!
We weren't supposed to be in the kitchen in the hostel until 7am, so no coffee until 7:30. And, it was instant as we did not have time to brew the real stuff. The tribe was tolerant, though. There are a million coffee shops in town.

This is our first tour ever in 17 years that we have no vegetarians. SCARY! I don't know what to do! Only a couple of small food issues among us.......maybe Jack can be a vegetarian just to even things out. :)

The tribe headed out on the Coastal Route from the hostel. We didn't dare take the truck that way: Mo said she wasn't even sure the cars could make some of the hills. Back through the tunnel for us. Just how I want to start my day!

From the coast the tribe headed inland to roll through the hills of Marin County to Petaluma. Miles and miles of ranches and farmland. Plenty of places to get lost, as some of the tribe did. The marks on the road needed to be adjusted a tad bit, from what was said. But, everyone made it into camp!

We took the freeway here but made time to backtrack the route to the Marin County Cheese factory to procure some fantastic bries for the appetizer hour before dinner. Across the street from the factory was a large group of Sherifs and police with a helicopter and 4wd vehicles. We asked the girls in the store front what was going on. They said there had been a 5 million dollar pot bust in the hills last week and they were out to find more. It's California, they said!

The KOA that we stayed at is much much quieter on a Monday night than when we were here on Saturday. No screaming meanies!

After a dinner of Greek Citrus Chicken, tossed green salad, leftover pea and pasta salad, steamed sprouted beans and rice, carrots and cauliflower, sautéed kale with a balsamic glaze (DOUBLE YUMMM!) and brownies for dessert the tribe headed to the map meeting and enjoyed an evening of a camp fire and camaraderie. It's a nice group, especially since Hillary is along for the ride!

Tomorrow is a trip through the wineries and up to Santa Rosa. Pictures will have to wait as the internet service is so slow I would be here all day. On to the next camp.Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-75233523493340732012012-09-16T22:02:00.001-07:002012-09-18T11:13:34.574-07:00Wine and Whine.......

I shall partake in both. This trip has just begun but the challenges started on the second day of driving down here. It's not bad enough that we have a 2 day drive in the big yellow truck. Crossing Oregon we have to pretend to be a real truck and drive no faster than 55mph. Crossing the California border we have to go through inspections: fortunately the gal that questioned us really didn't want to deal with us, so she sent us on our way. Not so at the weigh station south of Shasta. I did have my seat belt on. Kind of. Jack says that is why the State Trouper pulled us in to inspection. Not us really. Jack. I stayed in the truck for the hour he was being interrogated. Maybe it was the t-shirt that read, "I love guns & coffee." The trooper asked him if he had to be disarmed. Plus, it didn't help that the license plates on the truck I leased belonged to a stolen Freight Liner. He was oh so close to being in hand cuffs. With much research they decided us to be legit. Only now Jack has to keep a drivers log while on the road. A slight oversight on our part: I guess we are now officially truckers.

We made it to Petaluma on Saturday and headed to the KOA kampground for the night before meeting up with the tribe on Sunday. Not the place you want to be on a Saturday night. 5 million screaming munchkins wheeling around on big wheels, bouncing on the big bouncy thing, overrunning the pool, commandeering the bathrooms. I wanted to take in the movie at the pool, but The Lorax just wasn't what I had in mind. We just wanted to sleep. Not much of that happened. We did manage to get into town and have an awesome sushi dinner. Jack texted Arlen, our fearless tour leader, and told him the good news and bad news: he led him to believe that we were on our way, but Jack was in jail and the truck was impounded. Want to see Arlen react REALLY fast? Sorry Arlen.

Sunday morning we were up early and headed into Petaluma to explore town and visit the quilt shop before meeting the tribe and staff to kick off the tour. AMAZING quilt shop. They have an inventory of over 5000 bolts of fabric! I was in quilt hog heaven. Jack got to chill for an hour in the big comfy chair. Any good quilt shop has the big comfy chair for the husband.

We finished up in Petaluma and headed to the coast just north of San Francisco to the Marin Headlands Hostel. Jack was a little concerned about the road into the park.....justified. Highway 101 is a little sketchy in this truck with all of the traffic. He wasn't sure about the clearance of the bridge that we had to go under to get to the entrance of the park. After a couple of sharp scary turns we had ample room to clear the bridge. Then he told me he was even more unsure about the tunnel. WHAT tunnel? No one said anything about a tunnel. He was sparing himself days of me obsessing about the tunnel. I have not had the best of luck with tunnels. That story later. We got to the entrance and found that we had 6 inches to spare. The green light at our end was on and the sign said we had 5 minutes of green light time to get through the tunnel. It was about a 1/2 mile long. No problem. Except for the guy on the mountain bike peddling about 1/2 a mile an hour. There was no room to pass him so we had to follow him, of course with a line of traffic behind us. 3/4 of the way through the light must have changed. The traffic from the other end entered the tunnel and we were at a standstill. The cars ahead of us weren't very happy........they had to get out and get the 10 cars behind them to back out and let us through. I swear there is a tunnel God that I offended somewhere along the journey of these tours. Hopefully he is now satisfied that he has thoroughly scared the crap out of me enough times to be even.

We made it to the hostel and got set up for the first night with the tribe. We aren't allowed to cook outdoors here, so it was a dinner of cold salads and carrot cake. Curried chicken, pasta, pea, potato and green salad with lots of sides. Homemade corn muffins and carrot cake for dessert. The tribe was pleased, unlike the herd of raccoons that circled camp. What is a group of raccoons called? A ruckus? There are raccoon warning signs everywhere. For good reason. The luggage truck and mechanic had to take turns manning the hose to keep them off of the bikes and out of the trucks. Every time we got out of the back of the truck we had to lock it up..they even came in while I was in there. It's going to be a long week.

We have a great tribe for this trip: many new to ACA and lots new to our tours. Arlen has a great staff and it should be a fun week. Except for the raccoons. Oh, did I mention the skunk encounters on this trip 2 years ago? Off we go! Covered bridge in Corvallis: a view of the coast: sunset at Beachside State Park: the tribe venturing into new territory!

Better late than never? That's how it will have to be! Every time I thought of finishing the Oregon trip's blog life got in the way! And now we are ready to start the Wine and Harvest tour! My how time flies!

Oregon WAS a great trip. Some challenges that last few days with the traffic on highway 101: many times there is not much shoulder and you get a bunch of rent-a-rv'ers on the road and it's a bit dicey. But, the scenery is stellar!

From Devil's Lake the tribe headed south to a night at Beachside State Park where they played in the sand and watched a spectacular sunset. From there they continued down the coast to the town of Florence for two nights in Honeyman State Park. Here the tribe explored the sand dunes, kayaked the river, headed out on optional rides, explored the town of Florence and ate clam chowder and crab, built campfires and shared smores and stories of the trip.

Some of the highlights of the coast were: the Sea Lion Caves; optional rides up the Yachats River and to the top of a ridge for a view of the coast on one side and hills to Portland on the other; the coffee shop in Yachats; trying to pronounce Yachats; the old log church and State Park in Yachats; (they liked Yachats); riding through Waldport, the smallest harbor in the world; the stunning views along the coast.

I know I did not do this trip justice on my blog, but it was a great trip with great people and many new friends for rides to come. Examples of water stop guru Don's goodies: lunch at the fairgrounds in Corvallis: Carla's road marks leaving her camp sight....good advice!

An Odyssey it was! What a great tour! Where do I begin? At the beginning? That would be Richardson Park just west of Eugene...we pulled in after a 6 hour road trip from home to meet up with our trusty tour leader Pete and his almost all brand new crew. Marker Bob and Linda, on massage, were the only seasoned staff on this tour: our newbies included Matt on lunch, Don on water stop and Scott on luggage. Running a tour is always a challenge and the prospect of running one with an all new crew is a little daunting......but this crew proved to be stellar!

We kicked the first night off with registration and the map meeting in a glorious sun filled afternoon. The weather for the whole trip proved to be amazing....could not have asked for better conditions. After introductions and instructions we served up a salad bar dinner consisting of curried chicken salad, pasta salad, potato salad, green salad with all the trimmings, pea salad and home made cookies for dessert.

It was great to see so many friends from previous tours over the years: Bob, Jay and Eric from the Houston area: Pete and Carol from White Salmon, Washington: Carla from the map department of ACA: as well many, many new riders to the tours.

It was great to see that the average age on this tour was quite a bit younger than most of the tours that we do! We had a couple of father/daughter combos on the ride, as well a few younger couples. I would guess that the median age on the tours runs around 56+......this one came in much younger.

Day 2 on the tour broke bright and early. This was a short 39 mile day from the park to the fair grounds at Corvallis. It is a pretty ride traversing through agricultural lands of corn fields, grape orchards, acres of Christmas trees and nut orchards. Water stop was in the town of Monroe in the parking lot of the Sweetspot bakery. This tribe did a very nice job of consuming sweet rolls and pie from this quaint little stop in the road.

With a new crew I was a little concerned about the set up of the water stop and lunch stop. I try to provide enough varied foods to try and keep the stops interesting as well as giving the tribe what they need to re-fuel. I had briefed Don on the ins and outs of water stop. I gave him some suggestions as to how he could augment the presentation of the food so that the daily offerings were not mundane, boring, and tasteless. None of these applied to Don's water stops. He took the challenge with a water stop guru gusto that has been surpassed by none. With the tiki-tiki props provided by Leader Pete, he went over the top. Every day was a new surprise of what could be done with granola bars, banana bread, bagels, home made jams, bananas, peanut butter, nutella, dates and trail mix. By the end of the tour I decided he was hired for life. Not only were his creations beautiful, but they were tasty. He even challenged the tribe to a jam taste off. I provided home made strawberry, raspberry, and apricot jams for the tour. Everyone had their favorite...and I sent the tribe home with souvenir jars at the end of the tour.

Matt and Don were going to trade off lunch and water stop through out the week: but they settled into their own little culinary venues and were good to stay in their own happy place each day. I give Matt an extra pat on the back: he went above and beyond on day 5, the ride from Beachside State Park into Honeyman State Park. The tribe meandered and side tripped and played perfect tourists: he kept the lunch stop open until about 4:30.....still feeding the tribe ....when he should have been done by 2'ish.

Dinner the second night was a mini seafood feast. We did a kale and romaine salad with balsamic dressing, (kale is all the rage right now in the food world: very healthy and very green!) grilled oysters, bourbon salmon, corn on the cob, zucchini & eggplant strata with marinara sauce, and fresh strawberry shortcakes for dessert. The tribe did a good job of cleaning up the buffet......

Day 3 was one of the big ride days on the tour. We were up early to fuel the tribe with plenty of carbs and protein to get them up and over the hill from Corvallis into Lincoln City on the coast; home of the D River, shortest river in the world. French toast and scrambled eggs and 7 grain hot cereal from Wheat Montana helped round out the meal. The tribe was on the road early to find their way to Devils Lake State Park. It was a 73 mile day and a short bit of this route took the tribe onto a pretty remote road that offers a mile and a half of gravel. I believe the road department keeps it that way to keep the general tourist traffic off of it. The logging trucks use this road extensively and it proved to be a little scary at times for some of the tribe.

We had one of the tribe crash on today's route. He did go to get patched up: some pretty good road rash and soreness..nothing serious so he thought. After riding the next two days he decided that he was feeling pretty awful: a lot of pain stiffness. Come to find out he had 3 fractured vertebras in his neck....he was so so lucky that nothing worse came of this. One tough cookie.

We did not follow the route on this day: we headed up and around on the main highways and settled into camp to take Ruby Dew for a swim in the lake. We decided last minute to include Ruby on the trip. She was so pitiful while we were packing up to go: she curled up on my jacket and luggage and gave me those big, brown, sad eyes. I'm a push over. She proved to not be the big bad guard dog that she would like to think she is: the last night at Honeyman we were invaded by a family of raccoons: she snored away at the foot of the tent while Jack was out doing battle with the hose! Jack loves raccoons. NOT.

Enough for now....I am going back for a couple more minutes of sleep before I continue tackling the canning and preserving of the produce left over from the trip. I guarantee there will be zucchini relish for all next year....Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-77684368498331462662012-08-27T11:26:00.002-07:002012-08-27T11:26:48.591-07:00Catching up is....Hard to do! And that is what I will need to do tonight.....The Oregon ride was amazing and we have many stories to tell. One of which is that someone who shall remain nameless left the laptop and the I pad and the camera at home. I tried to write from the I phone, but that didn't work. So: I will catch you all up on the tour tonight when I can sit down and re-visit the week. It was awesome and those of you that didn't ride along with us missed a great tour. More tonight.Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-89595021184494464882012-08-11T11:23:00.002-07:002012-08-18T15:44:36.409-07:00Jammin Gears

As if I don't have enough to do....Susan and I have launched the first round of our new jam business....Jammin' Gears. We now have fresh, small batch strawberry and raspberry jams to provide each and every one with a sample of the great Northwest! We are using Skagit Valley strawberries and raspberries, the best available! For those of you who have been privileged to sample these wonderful jams on our tours know how yummy they are!

If you are on tour in the future you can purchase a jar or two from me....if you're not on tour email me at kj.productions@comcast.net and I can set you up! The price is $5.00 for a 8 oz jar and $7.50 for a 12 oz jar (plus shipping, of course).

What better way to fuel you over that next hill than with a pb & Jammin' Gears sandwich!Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-79814839653480939992012-07-30T10:27:00.000-07:002012-07-30T10:29:22.245-07:00Puppy Tales

Cycle Washington #2 has been over for a week now! Hard to believe! Ranger Tommy and a few of his pals are cycling the Olympic Coast. Jack and I have been working our tails off cleaning equipment and canning everything under the sun. I can't stand to throw out any of the leftover produce, so I now have 14 quarts of carrots, 7 quarts of tomatoes, 12 pints and 6 quarts of zucchini relish, 4 quarts of vegetable marinara sauce, 8 pints of curried vegetable stew, gallons of frozen berries and the last of 8 loaves of banana bread is in the oven. Whew. I know what we're eating all winter!

One story that I did not convey in my last post that happened on the rainy ride to Langley was a puppy tale. Don J and a couple of tribe members had just made the start of the bridge over the slough west of Anacortes and stopped for a couple of minutes. (I would stop and hitch a ride. Jack has not convinced me that I can ride the bridge, regardless of the cordoned off bike lane. The bridge is really high. I'm a chicken.) Back to the puppy tale. As they stood there a black lab youngster ran up and joined them. He thought it was a great day to tag along with a group of cyclists. We shall name him Spot for lack of a better name, though he did not have spots. Over the bridge Spot went, leading the tribe along the way. Spot had a great time running in front of them for the next 3 miles until it was time to cross highway 20 and head out to the island. "What to do?" pondered Don and friends. Spot surely needed to go home, and crossing highway 20 was not a safe place for him. To the rescue came Mechanic Kevin. Now known as Under Doggy Kevin the Puppy Saver. He rolled up thinking that there was a mechanical issue. No, just a Spot issue. Don convinced Kevin to fetch Spot and put him in the van, then transport him back to the other side of the bridge in hopes that he would find his way home. Kevin complied and when he pulled into the area that Spot joined the tribe he noticed a man standing outside of his truck looking around for his pup, Spot. Kevin asked him if he had lost a dog and miracle of miracles Spot made it home safe and sound. Good job Under Doggy Kevin.

Don told the story when he made it into camp that evening and it led to many, many dog stories. Don works with his dogs as companion pups servicing people in hospitals and care facilities. What a great endeavor! We heard many puppy tales from other tribe members....I know our pups are just as much family as the kids. I miss my Ruby Dew when we are on the road!
Cycle Washington #1 and #2 were great rides! I hope that ACA runs this tour again next year....hint hint. Riding across Deception Pass: a view from the pass: Ranger Tommy & his stellar crew: Ranger Tommy, we'll miss you!

It rained, it poured, kind of like a spoof from Noa's Ark! It wasn't forty days but we may have gotten that much precipitation in one day!

Sunday morning greeted the tribe with clouds and a chance of rain. What should have been a gorgeous, sunny day of riding along the beaches of Whidbey Island turned out to be a wet, sloshy day of sagging and hiding from the downpour. The view from Deception Pass was limited as was that of the Straights of Juan de Fuca. (Ranger Tommy tried out a new joke about the Straights last night. Can't publish it here but I can tell you he needs to stick to his original script. Nice try though.)

We rolled into camp and set up our kitchen for the last time with Ranger Tommy in the lead. As the rain continued Aaron was challenged on how to keep Baker dry. Under the truck didn't work. Under the shelter didn't work; he was determined to consume the piles of bird poo. (Baker, not Aaron.) His tent didn't work: he no longer has a screen on the door. Baker likes to destroy screens.

Mother Nature's sense of humor put the damper on the second to last day of Ranger Tommy's final tour, but not on the festivities at the last map meeting. Tom told his stories, the tribe feasted on Spiced Pork Chops, salad, East Indian vegetable stew, baked orzo with pesto & sun dried tomatoes and a HUGE bowl of three berries in a rhubarb sauce & fresh whipped cream for dessert. I am happy to say that this tribe was well fed this week. And I am proud to have provided the foods that they enjoyed.

The staff roasted Tom after dinner, with Daryl shining bright with his tale of trying to take over Cycle Utah this year, a tour Tom has led since it's inception. Evidently he has racked up quite the storage bill at Temple View RV park, having left equipment there for the last umpteen years.....Daryl presented Tom with a trumped up letter from the owner explaining the charges. Tom may have to get a real job. Oh, he's retired. I'm sure he'll work it out.

Kevin's wife, Linda, flew in on standby from the mid west and arrived just in time to join the fun.
There were tears and laughter, standing ovations, and a custom designed trophy to send Tom off from his last night of leading the tribe. For me, it's a tough goodbye. Tom introduced me to this eclectic way of life 16 years ago. It will be strange not having him on the road with us next year.

The evening wound down, we all turned in to soggy tents, (except for the fortunate few that got in early enough to set up their tents in the Fiddle Faddle Barn), and got some shut eye before an early start for the ride back to Redmond.

To Tom's last tribe: it was a pleasure cooking for you. I hope to see you on another ride. Maybe the Oregon Coastal Tour: there's still room!Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6437110497190799934.post-27349784181662431682012-07-24T10:47:00.001-07:002012-07-30T10:35:39.619-07:00We Be Jamming!
A plate full of yumm: Netzy getting on the road: oysters on the barbie: rum cake queen Nana, my bff Susan: Netzy partaking in the happy hour: a seafood feast.

On the one and one half days between the two Cycle Washington tours not only did I shop like a madwoman I baked for the trip and Susan and I managed to produce 50 jars of fresh strawberry jam, in hopes that the tribe would like to take home souvenirs from the trip! It was quite the assembly line going on in the kitchen: wash, hull, smash, cook, jar, seal. I am delighted to say that I came home from the tour jam free! I think we may have a new business venture happening. Jam anyone? Seriously.

We woke early on Saturday to more sprinkles and the forecast of more rain for the ride to Bay View State Park. The tribe is hanging in there: damp spirits that they are. The upside of the rain is that Aaron has been quite busy with bike cleaning. The starving grad student needs all the extra cash he can manage to procure. He has an extra hungry mouth to feed: he and his girlfriend gave themselves a chocolate lab puppy for Christmas. Baker is joining us tonight. He is a great grand puppy with an affinity for chocolate brownies (he ate a whole pan as I was out of the kitchen), screen doors (which I do not have one anymore), and flour (that was a trip to the vet while Aaron was on the last trip. Kara's parents were puppy sitting and he was a bad puppy). We will see what havoc he can wreak the last two days.

Today's ride was be a gentle day compared to the last. As the riders wound down the river into the Skagit Valley they peddled through the berry and potato fields, then along the Samish Bay into camp.
The rain started again as they left camp, but subsided in the afternoon and actually things warmed up.

Jack was walking through the campground last night and a man walked up to him and said, "I know you!". Jack looked at him and said, "I don't think so." The man said, "Yes I do! You were in the paper on Monday and your wife is the cook for the bicycle tours!" Too funny.

Jack and Sue and I scrambled the day away, filling propane, re-upping at Costco, picking up fresh berries at Sakuma farms, taking Mom for her Mocha, then up Chuckanut Drive once more to pick up the bivalves that the tribe is eagerly looking forward to for happy hour.

We set up camp, set out or jam for sale, and started the seafood feast promptly at four. We attracted quite a bit of attention from the other campers today. It is a weekend and the park is full. Many stopped by to see what was going on and one man even bought jam! The tribe enjoyed the steamed clams and mussels, as well the grilled oysters. We have a new tribe member joining us for his first tour from Chicago. He had never eaten bivalves before and is a new mussel convert. This tribe did not gain the notoriety of being seagulls, though. We only went through one case of oysters, not the two that last weeks gulls gulped down.

At tonight's map meeting Ranger Tommy introduced Mom to the tribe, pronouncing her the queen of rum cakes and cookies. She was given a standing ovation. Well deserved after years of providing yummy treats for many, many tribes. She's still baking away this week for the Oregon group....pretty amazing for ninety.

After a delicious feast of bourbon salmon, curried coleslaw, greens with fresh berries and a raspberry chipotle dressing, steamed vegetables and potatoes, pecan pie bars and cookies, the tribe waddles back to their camp sights for a good nights sleep. Sunday's ride is a tough one on the hills of Whidbey Island, and the weather isn't looking to friendly.Kathy Turnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16927231831889458474noreply@blogger.com0
